Volunteers needed to help paint mural

CVB working with local colleges, McPherson Arts Council to paint mural downtown
The McPherson Convention and Visitors Bureau is working with local artist Naomi Ullum and students in her mural painting class at Central Christian College of Kansas to paint a 30'by 16' mural at the southwest corner of Kansas Ave. and Ash Street this summer. The mural will depict the Olympic gold medal winning basketball team the Globe Refiners. The Refiners won the national championship in 1936, defeating the Hollywood Universal team. Members of both teams went on to be the first-ever USA basketball team to compete in the Olympics in Berlin. USA went on to beat Canada to bring home the gold medal. The Globe Refinery was located south of McPherson and is now known as NCRA. The Refiners' home court is now the McPherson community building. There will be several opportunities to help with the mural. The first is June 15 when volunteers are needed to putty and sand the 16 panels. A community volunteer day June 17 to prime all sides of the panels is planned on the lawn of CCCK beginning at 2 p.m. followed by a watermelon feed courtesy of NCRA. Other volunteers with artistic skills are needed to help transfer the drawing onto the panel and paint details. Anyone interested in this portion of the mural should contact Ullum at (620) 694-0269. Volunteers to help with the construction and mounting of the panels on the wall are also needed. This phase will begin in mid-July. Anyone interested in this phase should call Anne Hassler at 241-3340. The public is encouraged to be a part of this project and leave their stamp for posterity by putting their initials on the back of the panel.
